Builders of Berkeley

Builders of Berkeley

Doe Library Terrace
University of California, Berkeley

The Builders of Berkeley monument honors the vision, leadership, and commitment of the University of California’s leading benefactors since its founding in 1868.

The Builders of Berkeley, located at the heart of the campus in front of the main entrance to Doe Library, was dedicated on September 25, 2003.

The granite walls facing onto the grand staircase to Doe Library chronicle the history of philanthropy at Cal. To be included on the wall a donor’s lifetime giving has to be valued at $1 million or more in today’s dollars.

The names of new benefactors will be added each year, creating a living legacy and teaching future generations about the essential role philanthropy has played in making Berkeley the greatest public research university in the world.
